Choosing the Right Transducer
Your fishfinder is only as good as the information it receives. While it's easy to focus on screen size and features when choosing marine electronics, the transducer is one of the most important parts of any sonar system.
The right transducer depends on your boat, the depths you fish, your target species and the type of fishing you do. A setup designed for snapper fishing in 30 metres of water can be very different from one designed for finding bait and game fish offshore or fishing the deep water beyond the continental shelf.

600W or 1kW Transducer?
For many recreational boats fishing inshore and moderate depths, a quality 600W transducer can provide excellent performance without the cost of a larger 1kW system.
For anglers regularly fishing deeper water or wanting greater sonar performance and target separation, stepping up to a 1kW transducer can be worthwhile.
A 1kW system can provide stronger sonar performance at depth, but simply fitting the largest transducer isn't always the answer. The sounder module, frequencies, installation and intended fishing depth all need to work together.
High, Medium or Low Frequency?
Different sonar frequencies are suited to different fishing situations.
High Frequency (High CHIRP)
Provides excellent detail and target separation, making it well suited to shallower and inshore fishing. The trade-off is reduced performance as depth increases.
Medium Frequency (Medium CHIRP)
A versatile option that provides a useful balance between detail, coverage and depth. Medium-frequency transducers are popular with anglers who fish across a broad range of depths.
Low Frequency (Low CHIRP)
Designed for greater depth penetration and typically provides a wider coverage area at depth, making it particularly useful for deep-water and offshore fishing.
For anglers who fish both inshore and offshore, dual-band transducers can provide the flexibility to use different frequency ranges depending on the depth and fishing situation.
CHIRP Sonar
Traditional sonar transmits on a relatively narrow frequency, while CHIRP sonar sweeps across a range of frequencies.
When correctly matched and installed, CHIRP can provide improved target separation, clearer definition and better identification of fish, bait and bottom structure.
The frequency range still matters. High, medium and low CHIRP each have different strengths, which is why choosing the right transducer is just as important as choosing a CHIRP-capable display.
Transom Mount or Through-Hull?
Transom-mount transducers are popular because they are relatively straightforward to install and work extremely well on many trailer boats. Correct positioning is critical, however, particularly if you want reliable sonar readings while travelling at speed.
Through-hull transducers can offer excellent performance and a clean installation, particularly on larger boats and serious offshore fishing setups. Installation is more involved and the transducer needs to be correctly selected for the hull and mounting position.
There are also other installation options available depending on the boat and application.
Transducer Installation Matters
Even an expensive transducer can perform poorly if it's installed in the wrong position.
Water flow, turbulence, hull shape, mounting height, angle and proximity to strakes, steps and other fittings can all affect sonar performance.
That's why we consider the boat and the installation as part of the electronics package, rather than simply recommending a transducer from a specification sheet.
